Five years ago, this bright and loving soul’s life came to an end.
Those who knew Botham Jean (pronounced “BO-thum JON,” btw) said he saw the best in people and did what he could to draw it out of them.
Why should we do any different?
Why should we see the worst in people?
Why should we exacerbate division, injustice, in equality?
What good has it ever done to take the lower pass?
Isn’t it more likely we’ll be in the light by taking the higher road?
Remember the scene at the sentencing when his brother hugged his killer and forgave her? That’s the kind of light this world doesn’t comprehend, like John mentioned in the first verses of his biography of Jesus. That’s the kind of light that doesn’t come easy, let alone naturally, especially in a world that is content with its own version of illumination.
So, in loving memory of Botham and any other person who lifted you to higher ground, release anger and bitterness, resentment and fear. Take hold instead of peace, forgiveness, kindness, and hope.
Where will you be in five years from now if you do?
Where will others in your live be five years from now if you don’t?

“God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.” —1 John 1:5-7
